Breast and body surgery in Tunisia: which operation, which recovery?
In short: Breast augmentation, breast lift, breast reduction, liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL and lipoedema surgery are different operations with different recoveries, and the right one depends on your anatomy far more than on a photo you have saved. In Tunisia, these operations need a stay of roughly five to ten days depending on the procedure, and Medespoir’s package costs roughly 60% less than comparable surgery in Switzerland, with implants, the implant card, the compression garment and full board for one companion included. The 2025-2026 news that matters to patients concerns implant monitoring, the safety rules for buttock fat grafting, the effect of GLP-1 weight-loss medicines on healing, and Swiss basic insurance cover for lipoedema liposuction, which now runs until the end of 2028. This guide works through the questions women and men living in Switzerland actually ask before choosing breast or body surgery, and what changes when the operation takes place in Tunisia.
Updated November 2026. This article is general information and does not replace a medical opinion: only a surgeon who has examined you can recommend an operation, a technique or an implant.

What is new in breast and body surgery in 2025 and 2026?
The short version: patients increasingly want to restore a body changed by pregnancy, age or weight loss, rather than simply add volume, and the safety conversation has become more precise. Here are the developments that change the questions you should ask before booking.
Which body operations are the most popular?
Liposuction, breast augmentation and tummy tuck remain at the top. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) survey published on 19 June 2025, covering 2024, placed liposuction and breast augmentation second and third among surgical procedures worldwide, just behind eyelid surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) report published on 1 September 2026 confirms the same trio for 2025 in the United States, and records strong growth in lifts: upper body lifts up 22%, arm lifts up 21%, thigh lifts up 20% and breast lifts up 8%. In other words, « putting back » is now as common a request as « adding ».
What has changed for breast implants?
Monitoring has become stricter, without calling approved implants into question. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) counted, as of 30 June 2024, 1,380 unique cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) worldwide and 64 deaths; where the implant surface was known, 73% of cases involved textured implants. This cancer of the immune system remains rare. In September 2026, the Breast Surgery Collaborative Community, a working group of surgeons, patients and manufacturers, submitted to the FDA a shorter and more readable version of the patient decision checklist that women read and sign before receiving implants, with public comments open until 1 December 2026. These are American documents, but their questions apply everywhere: which implant, which surface, what monitoring, and what to do if a symptom appears.
Is the BBL safer than it was?
It is, in teams that follow the published rules. After a series of deaths caused by fat embolism, the main plastic surgery societies issued a joint safety statement on gluteal fat grafting. The central message is simple: fat must be injected only under the skin, in the subcutaneous layer, and never into or beneath the muscle, where the large veins run. Ultrasound guidance during injection is increasingly used to confirm where the cannula is. We come back to this in the BBL section.
What do GLP-1 weight-loss medicines change for body surgery?
They create new requests and new precautions. According to the ASPS, 82% of its members received consultation requests in 2025 linked to semaglutide or tirzepatide treatment. A study published in April 2026 in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery followed 373 patients who had a panniculectomy (removal of the hanging apron of abdominal skin): among GLP-1 users, delayed wound healing was more frequent (18.5% versus 7.5%), but seromas, the pockets of fluid that can form under a scar, were less frequent (4.9% versus 14%). An August 2026 publication in the same journal recommends a nutritional assessment before any body-contouring surgery after major weight loss, paying particular attention to protein, B vitamins and vitamin D.
Is lipoedema liposuction still covered in Switzerland?
Yes, under strict conditions and until 31 December 2028. Annex 1 of the Health Care Benefits Ordinance (KLV/OPAS), in its edition of 1 July 2026, keeps liposuction for lipoedema pain on the list of covered services, with the status « under evaluation ». The detailed conditions are in the lipoedema section below. One important point for anyone comparing options: this cover applies to treatment carried out in Switzerland, within the framework set by the ordinance.
Has Tunisian law changed anything for patients?
Yes. Tunisian Law No. 2024-32 of 19 June 2024 on the rights of health service users and medical liability requires that patients be informed in plain language about the doctor, the proposed treatments and their risks (Art. 12), that free and informed consent be obtained (Art. 14) and that patients have access to their medical file (Art. 17). It makes facilities liable for harm caused by the products and equipment they use (Art. 26) and requires private facilities and independent practitioners to hold insurance (Art. 31). For a breast implant, this has a very practical consequence: you can ask for the brand, model and lot number, and for a copy of your file.
| Development | Date and source | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|

Breast augmentation: implants, fat or both?
Breast augmentation is not one operation but a family of techniques. The right choice depends on your build, the quality of your skin, the volume you want and how much fat you have available. Medespoir describes the techniques it offers on its breast augmentation page and in its breast surgery guide (both in French).
Implant or fat transfer: how do I choose?
An implant suits you if you want a clear, predictable increase in volume; fat transfer suits a moderate, natural-looking gain if you have enough fat to spare. In fat transfer (lipofilling), fat is harvested by liposuction, purified and re-injected in small amounts into the breast. Part of the grafted fat is reabsorbed in the following months, which makes the result less predictable than an implant and sometimes means a second session. An implant gives immediate and stable volume, but it is a medical device that needs lifelong monitoring and will probably be replaced one day.
What is a « hybrid » augmentation?
It combines an implant with a layer of fat. The implant provides the volume; the fat grafted around it softens the contours, especially in the cleavage and in very slim women whose skin would otherwise show the edge of the implant. It has become popular because it allows a slightly smaller implant for a more natural result. See the hybrid augmentation page (in French).
Round or anatomical implant?
The choice matters less than most people think. A round implant gives a fuller upper cleavage; an anatomical, teardrop-shaped implant gives a softer upper pole. Once in place, a round cohesive-gel implant often takes on a teardrop shape when you stand. Anatomical implants are usually textured so that they do not rotate, which brings us back to BIA-ALCL: ask the surgeon to explain why they suggest one surface rather than another.
Above or below the muscle?
That depends mainly on how much tissue covers the implant. Behind the pectoral muscle, or partly behind it in a « dual plane », the implant is better covered, which suits slim women. In front of the muscle, recovery is often a little less painful and the implant does not move when you contract the pectoral, which can suit a breast that already has good cover, or a woman who does a lot of upper-body training. There is no position that is better in absolute terms, only the one that suits your anatomy.
What size should I choose?
The size your chest can carry, not the size in a picture. The surgeon measures the width of your breast base, the thickness of your tissues and the elasticity of your skin. An implant that is too wide for the chest or too heavy for the skin ages badly: it drops, stretches the skin and makes a revision more likely. Sizers slipped into a bra give an idea, but the result under the skin is different. Bring two or three photos of results you like, and one or two you do not: they often say more than a number of cubic centimetres.
Where is the scar?
Most often in the fold under the breast, sometimes around the areola, more rarely in the armpit. The fold incision, usually four to five centimetres long, is hidden by a bra and gives the surgeon good access. The areolar route often leaves a very discreet scar, but passes through the gland. The choice is made together during the consultation.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
In the large majority of cases, yes, especially when the implant is placed through the fold under the breast without crossing the gland. No operation can guarantee breastfeeding, which also depends on factors unrelated to surgery. If you plan a pregnancy soon, it is usually more sensible to wait: pregnancy and breastfeeding change the volume and position of the breasts and can alter the result.
Is augmentation under local anaesthetic possible?
For some indications, yes: typically moderate-volume implants placed in front of the muscle, with sedation. The type of anaesthesia depends on the technique, your health and your level of anxiety, and it is decided with the surgeon and the anaesthetist rather than chosen for comfort alone.
Is your plan realistic? Send your photos and tell us what you would like to achieve: you will receive a free, personalised quote in your name within 48 hours, stating the technique proposed, the length of stay and what the package covers.
Breast lift and breast reduction
How do I know whether I need a lift rather than an augmentation?
Look at where your nipple sits in relation to the fold under the breast. If the areola has dropped to the level of the fold or below it, this is called ptosis, and an implant alone will not lift a sagging breast: it adds volume to a breast that stays low, with a risk of a « double bubble » effect. A breast lift (mastopexy) removes excess skin, raises the areola and reshapes the gland. Medespoir’s page on breast ptosis explains the different grades.
Lift with or without an implant?
Without an implant if you are happy with your volume and it is simply in the wrong place; with an implant or fat if the breast has « emptied », for example after breastfeeding or weight loss. A lift combined with an implant is a more delicate operation, because the surgeon tightens the skin while adding a volume that pulls on it. Some surgeons do it in one stage, others prefer two stages depending on the degree of ptosis. Ask which approach is proposed and why.
What scars does a breast lift leave?
That depends on how much skin has to be removed: around the areola only for a small correction, around the areola plus a vertical line (the « lollipop ») for moderate ptosis, and an inverted T when the excess is large. Scars stay red for several months and then fade gradually, usually over twelve to eighteen months. Their final quality also depends on your skin, on smoking and on sun protection.
Can a breast reduction be reimbursed in Switzerland?
Sometimes, when it treats a health problem rather than an aesthetic wish. Persistent back or neck pain, grooves from bra straps or chronic irritation under the breasts can justify a request for cover from your health insurer, which decides case by case, usually after a prior request and the opinion of its medical adviser. This route only exists for an operation carried out in Switzerland. If cover is refused, or if your motivation is mainly aesthetic, the operation is at your own expense, in Switzerland as in Tunisia. If you have an international private medical plan through your employer, read its exclusions: most exclude cosmetic surgery entirely and few pay for planned treatment abroad.
Can I breastfeed after a reduction?
Often, but it is less certain than after an augmentation. A reduction moves the areola and removes part of the gland; depending on the technique, some ducts may be interrupted. If you plan a pregnancy, tell the surgeon: some techniques preserve the connection between gland and nipple better than others.
Will nipple sensation change?
It often changes for a few months and rarely permanently. Reduced sensation, or on the contrary hypersensitivity, is common after a reduction, a lift or an augmentation and usually improves with time. A lasting loss of sensation is possible, more often after a large reduction.
Can a reduction be combined with liposuction or a tummy tuck?
Yes, it is common, provided the total anaesthetic time stays reasonable and your health allows it. Combined operations need a longer stay: in Tunisia, plan on eight to ten days. The breast reduction and breast lift pages (in French) list the usual combinations.
And male chest surgery?
Enlarged male breast tissue (gynaecomastia) is treated by liposuction, by removing the gland, or both. Before surgery, the doctor looks for a medical or medication-related cause, such as hormones, some treatments or anabolic steroids. In Tunisia, the indicative stay is six to seven days. We cover it in detail in Gynaecomastia surgery in Tunisia: what should men living in Switzerland know?
| Your situation | Operation most often discussed | Indicative stay in Tunisia |
|---|---|---|
| Small breasts, firm skin, well-placed areolas | Augmentation with implants, fat transfer or hybrid | 6 to 7 days |
| Sagging breasts, enough volume | Lift without implant | 6 to 7 days |
| Sagging and « emptied » breasts | Lift with implant or with fat | 6 to 7 days |
| Heavy breasts, back pain | Breast reduction | Stated in your quote |
| Old implants to change or remove | Exchange, or removal with or without lift | Stated in your quote |
| Enlarged male chest | Gynaecomastia surgery | 6 to 7 days |
Living with implants: checks, replacement and removal
Do implants have to be changed every ten years?
No, not automatically. An implant has no expiry date, but it is not a lifetime device either: as years pass, the risk of rupture, capsular contracture or an aesthetic change increases. Implants are replaced when they cause a problem (rupture, contracture, displacement, discomfort) or when the patient wants to change the result. Regular checks are worth more than a scheduled replacement.
What checks do silicone implants need?
A regular clinical examination and, for silicone gel implants, imaging. Since its 2020 labelling update, the FDA recommends an ultrasound or MRI five to six years after implantation and then every two to three years, even without symptoms, to detect a silent rupture. In Switzerland, your gynaecologist or GP can prescribe these examinations. Always mention your implants before a mammogram so that the radiographer can adapt the images.
What is capsular contracture?
The body naturally forms a membrane, the capsule, around any implant. When this capsule tightens, the breast becomes firm, sometimes painful, and can change shape. Significant contracture is treated surgically by removing the capsule and often replacing the implant. The risk rises after some early complications such as a haematoma or an infection, which is one reason why post-operative care matters.
Which symptoms should send me to a doctor?
Sudden swelling of one breast, especially more than a year after surgery, a lump, redness or new pain. A late fluid collection around the implant should be investigated for BIA-ALCL by draining a sample for laboratory analysis. In 2022 the FDA also issued a safety communication on rare cases of squamous cell carcinoma and other lymphomas found in the capsule around implants. These situations are rare, but a new symptom should be shown to a doctor without waiting for the next routine check.
Does « breast implant illness » exist?
Some women describe general symptoms that they attribute to their implants: fatigue, joint pain, poor concentration, skin rashes. The FDA mentions these symptoms in patient information while stating that their causes are not established. Some women feel better after removal, others do not. If you are considering removal for this reason, a medical work-up beforehand is essential so that another cause is not missed.
Can implants be removed without leaving empty breasts?
Removal is often combined with a lift, sometimes with fat transfer. After years, the skin has been stretched by the implant; removal alone can leave an empty, sagging breast. Explantation with a lift tightens the skin and raises the areola, and fat transfer can restore some volume. See the page on implant removal and breast lift (in French).
Can implants placed in Switzerland be changed in Tunisia?
Yes, provided you bring the information on your current implants (implant card, operative report if possible) and recent imaging if a problem is suspected. The surgeon needs to know what they will remove, where it sits and in what condition it is. The page on implant exchange in Tunisia (in French) describes the process. If your original implants were placed by an English-speaking surgeon in Geneva or Zurich, ask their practice for a copy of the operative report before you request a quote: it saves time and avoids guesswork.
Liposuction: what it does and what it does not
Does liposuction make you lose weight?
No. It removes localised fat deposits that resist exercise and diet; it does not treat being overweight or obesity. The number on the scales changes little, sometimes only by a few kilos, while measurements and silhouette change clearly. The best candidates are close to their stable weight, with skin that has kept some elasticity.
Does fat come back after liposuction?
The fat cells removed do not come back, but those that remain can grow. If you gain a lot of weight, fat is stored in untreated areas, which can make the silhouette look unbalanced. The result is kept with a stable weight, not with a strict diet.
Vaser, J-Plasma, HD: do the techniques change the result?
They change the way the surgeon works more than the basic rule. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (Vaser) loosens the fat before suction, which can help in fibrous areas such as the back or the male chest. « High-definition » liposuction aims to sculpt muscle contours, which requires thin skin and an already lean patient. Skin-tightening technologies (radiofrequency, plasma) aim to improve skin retraction after suction. The surgeon’s skill and the selection of the patient matter more than the machine. The liposuction and Vaser liposuction pages (in French) describe the options.
How many areas can be treated at once?
Several, but the total volume removed is limited for safety reasons, because suction comes with losses of fluid and blood. The surgeon adapts the plan to your weight and health. In Tunisia, the indicative stay is five to six days for one or two areas and six to eight days for HD liposculpture.
When will I see the result?
A first idea after a few weeks, the final result after three to six months. Swelling and bruising decrease gradually; some areas can stay firm or numb for a few weeks. Massage and drainage recommended by the team, and wearing the compression garment, help the skin adapt.
How long do I wear the compression garment?
Usually several weeks, often four to six, day and night at first, according to the surgeon’s instructions. The compression garment is included in the Tunisian package; you may want to buy a second one so that you can wash the first.
Does liposuction leave scars?
Small scars a few millimetres long where the cannulas enter, placed in natural folds whenever possible. They can stay pigmented for several months, especially on olive or darker skin exposed to the sun, so protect them.
Liposuction or fat freezing?
Cryolipolysis cools the fat without surgery; it suits small, well-defined areas and often needs several sessions, with a more modest result. Liposuction remains the reference for larger volumes or precise contouring. There is also a rare but known risk of paradoxical fat enlargement in the area treated by cold.
Tummy tuck and abdominal separation
Liposuction or tummy tuck: how can I tell?
Pinch the skin of your abdomen below the navel. If the excess is mostly fat and the skin is firm, liposuction may be enough. If the skin hangs, has extensive stretch marks or forms an apron, only a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) removes it. It can also tighten the rectus muscles when they have separated.
What is diastasis recti?
It is the separation of the two vertical abdominal muscles, common after one or more pregnancies. It leaves a tummy that still bulges despite weight loss, sometimes with a small hernia at the navel. Physiotherapy improves function, but a wide separation does not always close on its own. A tummy tuck can correct it by stitching the muscles together.
What scar does a tummy tuck leave?
A low horizontal scar from hip to hip, placed to be hidden by underwear, and a scar around the navel. A mini tummy tuck, for excess skin below the navel only, leaves a shorter scar. A circumferential tummy tuck, which goes all the way round the body, is mainly for patients after very large weight loss. Medespoir’s page on tummy tuck scars (in French) shows the usual evolution.
How long is the recovery?
Allow two to three weeks before returning to office work, more for physical work, and at least six weeks before lifting loads or resuming abdominal exercise. In the first days you walk slightly bent forward so as not to pull on the scar. In Tunisia, the indicative stay is seven to ten days, which covers the period when daily care and monitoring are most useful. Our article Tummy tuck in Tunisia: what does recovery look like week by week? follows the recovery in detail.
What are the specific risks of a tummy tuck?
Seroma (fluid collecting under the skin), wound-healing problems, especially in smokers, and venous thrombosis are the most discussed. Prevention means stopping smoking several weeks before and after surgery, walking early, compression, and often preventive anticoagulant treatment decided by the team. Flying adds a risk factor for thrombosis, which is one of the reasons why the stay should not be shortened.
Do I need to have finished losing weight?
Yes. A tummy tuck is done at a weight that has been stable for several months, ideally close to the weight you intend to keep. Significant weight loss after the operation can loosen the skin again; weight gain can stretch the scar and distort the result. If you are on a GLP-1 medicine, discuss the timing with the prescriber and the surgeon.
Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck?
Yes, but pregnancy can stretch the skin and separate the muscles again. That is why surgeons generally advise completing your family before the operation.
BBL and buttock surgery: safety first
What is a BBL?
The « Brazilian butt lift » combines liposuction of the waist, flanks or back with re-injection of the purified fat into the buttocks. It therefore changes two areas: the surroundings are slimmed, the buttock is shaped. The result depends on how much fat is available and how much of it survives in the buttock.
Why did the BBL get a bad reputation?
Because of fat embolism. When fat is injected into or under the gluteal muscle, it can enter the large veins of the region and travel to the lungs, with a risk of death. The societies’ joint statement requires fat to be placed only in the subcutaneous tissue, with a suitable cannula and a technique that allows its path to be controlled. Ultrasound guidance, now increasingly common, lets the surgeon see the cannula and confirm that it stays above the muscle.
What should I ask before a BBL?
- In which layer is the fat injected, and how does the surgeon check it?
- Is ultrasound used during the injection?
- What volume is planned, and what happens if there is not enough fat available?
- Who performs the injection: the surgeon personally?
- How long must I avoid sitting directly on my buttocks?
In Tunisia, a Smart BBL requires an indicative stay of seven to eight days. See the buttock augmentation and 360° liposuction and ultrasound-guided BBL pages (in French).
How much fat « takes » after a BBL?
Part of the injected fat is reabsorbed during the first months; the final volume can only be judged after three to six months. Large weight changes after surgery alter the result, because grafted fat behaves like fat from the area it came from.
What about buttock implants or injections?
Buttock implants are an alternative for very slim people, with their own risks (displacement, infection, discomfort when sitting). Injections of volumising products into the buttocks, and especially liquid silicone or unauthorised products injected outside a medical setting, are dangerous; health authorities regularly warn against them.
Lipoedema: diagnosis, Swiss insurance and surgery
How do I recognise lipoedema?
It is a symmetrical accumulation of fat, usually on the legs and sometimes the arms, almost always in women, which spares the feet and hands and comes with pain on pressure and easy bruising. The fat resists diet and exercise. Diagnosis is clinical and should be made by a doctor, often an angiologist, who distinguishes it from obesity or lymphoedema. Medespoir’s lipoedema treatment guide (in French) explains the stages.
What should be tried before surgery?
Basic treatment is conservative: properly fitted compression, manual lymphatic drainage, physical activity and weight management. It relieves symptoms but does not make the fatty tissue disappear. Surgery, a liposuction technique that protects the lymphatic vessels, comes in when pain persists despite this treatment.
What are the conditions for Swiss basic insurance cover?
According to Annex 1 of the KLV/OPAS (edition of 1 July 2026), liposuction to treat lipoedema pain is covered, with the status « under evaluation » and validity until 31 December 2028, on the following conditions:
- the pain responds insufficiently to intensive, documented conservative treatment (consistent compression, manual lymphatic drainage) of at least twelve months;
- cover requires prior approval from the insurer, which takes its medical adviser’s opinion into account;
- the indication is set on an interdisciplinary basis by at least two specialists from angiology, plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, endocrinology-diabetology and dermatology;
- the operation is carried out by a specialist who masters the liposuction technique.
When does Tunisia make sense for lipoedema?
When the Swiss route is not open to you or does not suit you: no twelve months of documented conservative treatment, refusal of prior approval, or a wish to treat areas or volumes that the cover does not include. In that case, the operation is at your own expense and the Tunisian package costs roughly 60% less than in Switzerland. The indicative stay is six to nine days. Treatment is often done in several stages, area by area, which means several trips: discuss this at the quote stage. Our article Lipoedema surgery abroad: what should Swiss residents know? goes further on the insurance questions.
Do I need to keep wearing compression after surgery?
Yes, at least during healing and often beyond, depending on your symptoms. Lipoedema is a chronic condition: surgery reduces the painful tissue, but lifestyle measures and follow-up with an angiologist remain useful.
After pregnancy: when and what to operate
How long should I wait after giving birth?
Most surgeons advise waiting several months after you stop breastfeeding, often at least six, and reaching a stable weight. Breasts take time to settle to their resting volume, and the abdomen keeps changing during the first year. Operating too early risks correcting a temporary state.
What is a « mummy makeover »?
It is the combination, in one or two operations, of breast surgery (lift, augmentation or reduction) and abdominal surgery (tummy tuck, liposuction). The advantage is a single recovery; the drawback is a longer operation and a more demanding recovery, especially with young children to carry. Medespoir’s mummy makeover page (in French) lists the combinations, and our article on what drives the cost of a mommy makeover in Switzerland explains the Swiss side.
How do I organise childcare?
Arrange help for at least two to three weeks after you get home: you should not lift a toddler after a tummy tuck or a breast lift. Many expat families in Switzerland have no grandparents nearby, so this is worth planning before you book rather than after. The Tunisian package includes accommodation for one companion, which lets you travel with your partner or a friend; children generally stay in Switzerland.
Will another pregnancy ruin the result?
It can change it, especially the abdomen and breast position. If another pregnancy is possible, it is often wiser to postpone the tummy tuck and to discuss a more limited breast procedure.
What about stretch marks?
Surgery only removes them when it removes the skin that carries them, for example below the navel during a tummy tuck. The remaining stretch marks can be softened, without disappearing, by some lasers or microneedling.
Four common situations and a typical plan
These examples are composites of frequent requests, not real patients. They show how a surgeon reasons; your own plan depends on your examination.
34, two children, breasts that have « emptied » and a small tummy bulge
Typical plan: check that weight has been stable for several months and that breastfeeding ended at least six months ago. If the areolas sit at or below the fold, a lift with a modest implant or with fat is discussed rather than a large implant alone. For the abdomen, the pinch test and an examination for diastasis decide between liposuction and a mini or full tummy tuck. If a third child is possible, the abdomen waits. Stay in Tunisia for a combined operation: eight to ten days.
52, implants placed 15 years ago, one breast has become firm
Typical plan: imaging in Switzerland before travelling (ultrasound or MRI) to look for rupture, with the implant card and old operative report if available. If the firmness is due to contracture, the capsule is removed and the implant either replaced or removed; if removed, a lift is usually needed to avoid an empty breast. The decision between exchange and removal belongs to you, after a frank discussion of the result you can expect.
41, legs painful and heavy since puberty, compression worn irregularly
Typical plan: diagnosis by an angiologist in Switzerland, then twelve months of documented conservative treatment if you want to keep the Swiss insurance route open. If that route is closed or you choose not to wait, surgery in Tunisia can be planned in stages, starting with the most painful area. Compression continues after each stage.
29, slim, wants a fuller buttock shape
Typical plan: the surgeon first checks whether there is enough fat for a BBL. If there is very little, the honest answer may be a modest result, an implant discussion, or no operation at all. If a BBL is possible, ask the five safety questions listed above and plan the sitting restrictions around your job and commute.
Having breast or body surgery in Tunisia from Switzerland
Why do people living in Switzerland choose Tunisia for breast and body surgery?
For three practical reasons: direct flights from Geneva and Basel-Mulhouse take around two hours (from Zurich, with or without a stopover depending on the season), the package costs roughly 60% less than comparable surgery in Switzerland, and the stay is organised from arrival to departure. Our general guide, Cosmetic surgery in Tunisia in 2026: what are Swiss residents asking?, covers the wider picture.
I don’t speak French. Is that a problem?
It is something to plan for. In Tunisia, consultations and medical documents are in French. If you are not comfortable in French, say so when you request your quote, consider travelling with a French-speaking companion (the package includes one), and have the operative report and discharge instructions translated for your doctor in Switzerland if needed. Never sign a consent form you have not fully understood: Tunisian law requires information in plain language, and you are entitled to ask for explanations until you understand.
What does the package include for breast or body surgery?
The Tunisian package includes the pre-operative consultation, tests, the operation, the whole team (surgeon, anaesthetist, surgical assistant), the operating theatre, hospitalisation, implants with the implant card, the compression garment, daily care at the hotel, the final check and discharge authorisation, the operative report, full-board hotel accommodation for you and one companion, all transfers, and remote follow-up once you are back in Switzerland. You pay separately for the flight, personal expenses, any extension for convenience, care received in Switzerland after your return, travel insurance (recommended) and bank charges. See the prices page (in French).
How many days should I stay?
| Operation | Indicative stay in Tunisia |
|---|---|
| Liposuction of one or two areas | 5 to 6 days |
| HD liposculpture | 6 to 8 days |
| Breast augmentation or lift, gynaecomastia | 6 to 7 days |
| Smart BBL | 7 to 8 days |
| Tummy tuck | 7 to 10 days |
| Lipoedema | 6 to 9 days |
| Combined operations | 8 to 10 days |
These durations, published on Medespoir’s stay page (in French), are indicative: your quote states the length that fits your programme.
How do I prepare the remote consultation?
Send photos from the front, side and three-quarter view in natural light, together with your medical history, your medicines (including a GLP-1, the pill or hormone treatment), your height and weight and, for the breasts, your current and desired bra size. For existing implants, attach the implant card. The more complete the file, the more precise the quote.
Which tests should I have in Switzerland before leaving?
The surgeon tells you which tests are needed. For breast surgery, recent breast imaging is often requested depending on your age and family history; your gynaecologist can prescribe it. A blood test is common before a major operation. Tests done in Switzerland are paid by you or by your insurer depending on the medical reason.
How do I check the surgeon?
Ask for the surgeon’s name and specialty and check their registration with the Tunisian Medical Council (Conseil national de l’Ordre des médecins), whose register is online. Medespoir’s surgeons are presented on its website.
Is travel insurance enough?
Travel insurance is recommended but read the small print: many policies exclude complications of planned cosmetic surgery. Check whether yours covers medical repatriation and complications after an elective procedure abroad, and whether your Swiss supplementary insurance or international plan says anything about it.

Recovery and the return to Switzerland
Can I fly straight after body surgery?
You fly home after the surgeon’s final check and discharge authorisation, at the end of the indicative stay. During the flight, wear your compression, drink water, walk down the aisle if possible and follow any preventive treatment prescribed. The flight of around two hours from Tunisia keeps the time spent sitting still short.
When can I exercise again?
Walking from the first days; stationary cycling and gentle exercise after two to three weeks depending on the operation; running, upper-body weight training and abdominal work after about six weeks, with the surgeon’s agreement. After a breast augmentation, avoid wide arm movements and carrying loads for several weeks. If you ski, plan the winter season around this: a fall on a breast augmentation or a fresh tummy tuck scar is not something you want in the first two months.
When can I sleep on my front?
After breast surgery, you sleep on your back for several weeks. After a BBL, on the contrary, you avoid pressure on the buttocks: you sleep on your front or side and sit on a suitable cushion according to instructions.
Who follows me up once I am home?
Remote follow-up is included in the package: you send photos and questions to the team. For local care (removing a stitch, a dressing, checking a seroma), a GP or gynaecologist in Switzerland can help using the operative report; this care is paid by you or your insurer depending on the case. Tell your GP before you leave that you are planning surgery abroad: some doctors prefer to know in advance.
Which warning signs need a doctor quickly?
- one breast or area that suddenly swells and becomes hard and painful on one side (haematoma);
- fever, spreading redness or cloudy discharge (infection);
- a painful, swollen calf, breathlessness or chest pain (thrombosis or embolism: this is an emergency, call 144);
- a scar that opens or turns dark.
How do I protect my scars?
Avoid direct sun for at least a year, use a high-protection sunscreen and, on medical advice, silicone sheets or gel. Massage starts once the scar is fully closed. A scar that thickens or itches for a long time should be shown to the surgeon: treatments exist.
What if I don’t like the result?
First wait until the swelling has gone, which often takes several months, before judging. Then talk to the team that operated on you, with photos. A frank discussion at that stage is far more useful than an early verdict at three weeks, when almost every body-contouring result still looks swollen and uneven.

Frequently asked questions
Which body operation is the most requested?
Liposuction, followed by breast augmentation and tummy tuck, according to the international ISAPS and ASPS statistics.
Can I have a breast augmentation without implants?
Yes, by fat transfer, if you have enough fat to harvest and want a moderate increase in volume. Several sessions are sometimes needed.
Are the implants included in the Tunisian package?
Yes. The package includes the implants with the implant card, which states the brand, model and lot number.
How long do I wear the surgical bra?
Usually four to six weeks, day and night at first, according to the surgeon’s instructions.
Can breasts and abdomen be done in one stay?
Yes, if your health allows it and the operating time stays reasonable. The indicative stay for combined operations is eight to ten days.
Is lipoedema surgery in Tunisia reimbursed by Swiss basic insurance?
No. The cover set out in the KLV/OPAS concerns liposuction carried out in Switzerland, after prior approval from the insurer and under strict conditions.
Can I have surgery while taking Wegovy or Mounjaro?
Always declare the treatment. It slows stomach emptying, which matters for anaesthesia, and can influence healing. The team will tell you whether and when to pause it.
Should I travel with someone?
It is advisable, and the package includes accommodation for one companion. For English speakers, a French-speaking companion is also a useful second pair of ears during consultations.
Does Medespoir offer these operations in Turkey?
In Turkey, Medespoir confirms hair transplants. For breast or body surgery, your quote states whether the operation is possible and where.
